PSI Certified Professional Pet Sitter Nikki Timberlake, owner of Pawsotively Purrfect Inc., in Fort Myers, Fla., has been named Pet Sitters International’s 2016 Pet Adoption Advocate of the Year.

Pet Sitters International (PSI) is the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters and has actively promoted pet adoption through its annual Take Your Dog To Work Day® campaign since the event was created in 1999. To further this mission, PSI created the Pet Adoption Advocate of the Year Award in 2012 to honor one PSI member each year who has gone above and beyond to promote local pet adoptions.

“PSI’s desire is that every pet would be a wanted pet with a professional pet sitter to care for him or her and as a whole, PSI members are passionate pet lovers with a desire to help,” explains PSI President Patti Moran. “Selecting just one member to receive the 2016 award and $500 donation to a local shelter or pet-rescue group was no easy task, but Nikki’s innovative ideas to support pet adoptions caught the attention of the selection committee.”

Timberlake, who joined PSI in 2010, serves as vice president of A Roof for Roofus Rescue (R3), a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer, nonprofit rescue that visits kill shelters throughout Florida to rescue pets on death row to place them in foster homes until they are adopted. She has selected A Roof for Roofus Rescue to receive the $500 donation from PSI in her honor.

After becoming a board member, Timberlake suggested a metal recycling program to raise funds to offset the rescue’s expenses. R3 has distributed fliers and promoted this program to the local community and picks up donated old washing machines, hot water heaters, aluminum cans and other types of scrap metal. R3 volunteers then sort the metal donations before redeeming at a local recycling center and use the money earned through these efforts to support all aspects of the rescue.

“We have been able to save the lives of many animals ‘one can at a time’ through the efforts of our supporters and our recycling program,” explains Timberlake.

When Timberlake first joined the R3 board, there were only three members. Through the board’s recruitment efforts, there are now five board members and multiple volunteers who oversee the group’s Facebook page, monthly adoption events, create marketing materials and write grants.

R3’s most immediate need is to raise funds to purchase a trailer to carry their tables, crates, banners, tents and  other materials to events  instead of having all of their equipment stored at board members’ homes.

World Spay Day is an annual event of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International to inspire people to save animals’ lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats. World Spay Day officially takes place on the last Tuesday of February—but events will be running all through the month! The 18th Annual World Spay Day is Feb. 26, 2013. All donations made to The HSUS through the Pageant by contestants and/or voters, as well as all optional category entry fees collected by The HSUS, benefit a grant program created by The HSUS to help participating organizations continue their valuable spay and neuter work after World Spay Day 2013 ends.

Entering the Main Pageant category for the Judges’ Choice and the Popular Pet Awards, as well as voting, are free, but this Pageant isn’t just fluff. Please make a donation to save the lives of dogs, cats, and other animals

Puppy Up! Fort Myers, FL

2milliondogs1

The 2 Million Dogs – Puppy Up! Fort Myers, FL walk will be held on November 4th, 2012 at the Petco in the Forum located at 9380 Dynasty Dr., Fort Myers, FL 33905-5574

This event is all about raising money for comparative oncology studies and awareness of canine cancer. We are looking for vendors and sponsors and people willing to donate items for the silent auction. We also want people to register to come out and walk with their dogs. Click here for more information on this event and to make a donation.

It began with a promise to raise awareness of canine cancer one mile, one city, and one person at time. Luke Robinson with his two dogs walked 2000 miles from Austin to Boston to fulfill the promise he made to his dog Malcolm who died from this horrible disease.

2 Million Dogs was formed on the belief that if 2 dogs can walk 2000 miles to bring awareness to cancer surely 2 million dogs can walk 2 miles. Through The Puppy Up! Walk, we are building the largest pet and people cancer community in the world; from business people to artists to scientists and humanitarians, a partnership forged with the singular purpose of ridding the world of its deadliest disease.

The 2 Million Dogs Foundation is committed to discovering the common links between canine and human cancers and the causes of these cancers through comparative oncology research.

Sign up for a 2 Million Dogs Puppy Up! Walk… there will never be a better time like this to Puppy Up! against cancer.

A cancer-free world starts with one dog, each mile at a time.

The monies raised through the November 4th, Fort Myers event and subsequent events, will be used to partner with leading cancer research institutions to help further their work in the leading-edge field of comparative oncology.

Just like humans, dogs naturally develop cancer. The work of clinical veterinary oncologists in using naturally occurring cancers in animals to better understand and treat cancer in humans is called comparative oncology. There are several factors that make comparative oncology important in the fight against human cancer:

  • Pets are exposed to many of the same environmental risks as people
  • The cancer cells are biologically comparable
  • There is a large population of cats and dogs with pre-existing cases of cancer
  • Cancer occurs in pets within years compared to decades in humans.

2 Million Dogs grew from a cross-country walk by Luke Robinson of Austin, TX and his two dogs Hudson and Murphy. They walked from Austin to Boston to fulfill the promise Luke made to his dog Malcolm, a Great Pyrenees who died from cancer. Luke later formed 2 Million Dogs with the belief that if two dogs can walk 2000 miles to raise awareness about canine cancer surely two million dogs can walk 2 miles.
